At least 19 people have been killed and 35 injured in a bus crash in central Mexico, local officials say.

The crash happened in the state of Hidalgo as the bus was returning from an outing to a circus.

Relatives identified six of the dead at the accident site in the village of Aguirre de Lomas.

One minor was the only survivor. He told local media the bus was travelling too fast to stop at a curve.

The incident happened on Monday afternoon in the area of Tlahuelilpan, where the Nuevo Leon state army brigade is based.

Crash victims were rushed to hospitals in the town, where one unidentified passenger died later.

The emergency services have been working to clear the road of spilled fuel, and wreckage from the bus.

Shortly after the crash, local media reported that four others on the bus had been taken into custody.

The attorney general’s office in Hidalgo has said it will investigate the cause of the crash.
